Here's what local buyers should know.
Why fibreglass instead of tiles or acrylic?
A tiled shower looks good on day one, but grout lines are a long-term maintenance headache — they absorb water, stain, and eventually crack, letting moisture into the wall behind them. Often you don't know you have a leak until the problem has become serious. A fully moulded fibreglass cubicle, on the other hand, is a single, seamless piece with no grout and no internal joins, so there's nowhere for mould or water damage to take hold. Just a clean, bright, high gloss finish that's easy to wipe down and keep looking great.
Compared to acrylic, fibreglass gelcoat holds up better under everyday impact — around 70% more impact resistant — and if it does get scratched or chipped, it can be repaired and polished back to a like-new finish on-site. The same can't be said for most overseas imported acrylic-coated units; once they're damaged, the whole unit often needs replacing.
Fibreglass also absorbs roughly 90% less water than a tiled shower base, and is built to last up to three times longer than typical alternatives — no rust, no rot, no mould.
Finding the right size
Beachmere Fibreglass manufactures a full range of 3-sided one-piece cubicles, from compact 770mm x 760mm low-front units through to 1500mm x 900mm high-front models, plus corner cubicles in 950mm x 950mm and 1050mm x 1050mm. Depending on the model, cubicles come with different built-in configurations of soap holders and foot rests moulded straight into the unit, so there's nothing extra to fit or reseal down the track.
Because each cubicle is a single moulded piece, careful measurement matters more than it would with tiles or a flat-pack kit. Check doorway width and height, ceiling height (so the unit can be stood upright once inside), and consider how much room you have to manoeuvre it the unit into place. Wherever possible, it's best to get the cubicle into the bathroom before stud walls or door frames are finished, rather than trying to fit a rigid one-piece unit around a completed frame.
Installation is simpler than people expect
One of the most common questions we get from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast customers is whether a fibreglass shower needs to be waterproofed underneath — it doesn't. Like a bath, the whole unit is a fully enclosed, waterproof shell.
Installation is just a timber batten fixed to the wall studs, with the shower's flanges secured to the batten using a thick bead of silicone adhesive.
Cubicles also come with the option of a chrome shower rail and pre-drilled holes already in place, so hanging a curtain is quick and straightforward — no on-site measuring or drilling required.
No tiling, no waterproofing membrane, no trades stacking on top of each other.
